They are completely different: from the colorful “Tropico” to more abstract projects like Battlefield. Russia has also become a source of inspiration for game makers many times, and these projects have often become masterpieces.
Syberia
Syberia or “Siberia” is a project about Russia, created not by Slavic, but by French developers. There are three games in total in the series, but it was the first that made a splash in its time. it point-and-click quest, in which the player will have to try on the role of a female lawyer from America.
The lady arrives in Siberia in order to find the owner of the factory, which she needed to acquire. The developers have tried recreate the atmosphere of a harsh, cold edge… The Soviet Union is often remembered, on the map of the game there is real Russian cities (for example, Komsomolsk), mentioned cultural and scientific workers…
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2
Strategy Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 tells an alternative history of Russia in its futuristic setting. The Allies were able to win the war, and the Soviets lost their leader, Stalin. The current leader, Alexander Romanov, who was put as a “doll”, decided start a revolution and take revenge on the oppressors…
Each campaign is literally saturated with Russian flavor. Here you will have to destroy the Grand Kremlin Palace, and rush into Alaska, and even manage huge “red armies“. The game has its own map editor and a huge number of mods that make it relevant even now.
Tarkov
Escape from Tarkov was released in 2017 and is still in beta, however this shooter instantly loved by players. It hyperrealistic, with incredible shooting physics and a cool damage system. In addition, the entire project is executed in the Russian flavor.
Events take place in the Russian Federation, but in its alternative version. The city of Tarkov, in which the protagonist gets stuck in the plot, does not really exist, but spelled out as realistically as possible… According to legend, it is located in the Norvinsk region. The plot is served to players through a separate multiplayer mode and a system of special quests that are issued by merchants. They also communicate exclusively in Russian – straight, a little rough, but still charming.
Bunny
Bunny is mystical visual novel about heavy 90s and a small Russian village. The family of the protagonist Anton moves there. Not so long ago, their grandmother died, and poverty drove the boy’s parents, his younger sister, and himself into this wilderness.
However, from the very first days, some devilry begins to happen around. First, Anton learns that a boy has disappeared in the village, and then he meets a fox girl and learns more and more secrets of the local forest. In Game a huge number of references to the culture of the 90s: condensed milk on bread, turbo chewing gum and much more. And most importantly, the plot describes the real fates of people. Each character can be recognized as a distant acquaintance or a good friend. The project was implemented based on eponymous novel by Dmitry Mordas, however, there are several storylines, and only one of them coincides with the book.
Metro 2033
Metro 2033 – shooter based on the novel of the same name. The main character, Artem, lives in war-torn Moscow and survives the fight against the mysterious blacks. Familiar streets and buildings await players, for example, Ostankino Tower or relatives Metro stations: VDNKh, Botanical Garden, Rizhskaya and others.
Since the game is based on the lore of the novel by a Russian author and was created by a studio from Ukraine, the scenes and surroundings are as accurate as possible. The characters have Russian names and surnames, life, color and mentality are well conveyed. In addition, the game has excellent voice acting and the author of the novel himself, Glukhovsky, as a screenwriter.
