Choosing a movie for the evening is a real torment for most people. We suggest taking a closer look at science fiction drama films. The list includes both world hits and niche, but extremely high quality works.
Lobster (2015)
The Lobster, starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and won a Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was nominated for Golden palmand an Academy Award for Original Screenplay.
The action takes place in a world where lonely people are arrested and sent to a special hotel. There they must find a mate, otherwise they will be turned into animals and released into the forest.
The Shape of Water (2017)
The Shape of Water is considered by many to be Guillermo del Toro’s best work to date. The film was a huge success and received thirteen Academy Award nominations, including for the best picture and direction.
The action takes place in 1962 in Baltimore. A dumb cleaning lady works in a classified, high-security government facility where a strange humanoid creature is being studied. After a while, she falls in love with him and tries to help him escape.
2046 (2004)
2046 – completion of the Wong Kar-Wai trilogy (the previous parts were called “Wild Days” and “In the Mood for Love”). The last installment focuses more on dramatic rather than sci-fi elements.
Following the story outlined in the first two parts, “2046” depicts the consequences of the protagonist breaking up with the love of his life and trying to hide his grief in romance with other women.
Gravity (2013)
Perhaps the most prominent role of Sandra Bullock. “Gravity” was a huge success both from the box office and the love of critics for the picture. The film received ten Academy Award nominations and won seven of them, including the “Best Director“(Alfonso Cuarona).
Almost all the action of the movie takes place in space, with the exception of the final scenes. The plot tells the story of two American astronauts who were in Earth orbit after their shuttle was destroyed.
Out of the car (2014)
One of the most impressive roles of actress Alicia Vikander to date, as well as a great start to the career of rookie director Alex Garland, previously known only as a writer of novels and screenplays. Made with a relatively small budget, Out of the Machine was highly praised for its realistic CGI and was awarded Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
The story is about a programmer who gets the opportunity to spend a week with the CEO of the company he works for. Upon arriving at an isolated house, he learns that he will have to perform a Turing test on a humanoid robot with artificial intelligence.
Mr. Nobody (2009)
“Mr. Nobody” received many positive reviews after its release, and earned awards for the best make-up and camera work… The main role was played by Jared Leto, and the picture became a cult work, which is still being discussed.
The story begins in the future when a 118-year-old man named Nemo Nobody is the oldest mortal on the planet. He is asked about his life, and the main character begins to talk about how his parents met. The strangeness begins at the moment when the old man leads the story of several lines of life at the same time.
Arrival (2016)
Denis Villeneuve’s film Arrival was a huge success at the time of its release and received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Film, Director and Cinematography, and Adapted Screenplay. Amy Adams also received a nomination forGolden globe“For Best Actress.
The plot tells the story of a linguist girl who was commissioned by the US Army to find a way to communicate with aliens who arrived on Earth in huge spaceships.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004)
One of the best jobs in the careers of Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey. The scripts for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” were written by the notorious Charlie Kaufman. Subsequently, he became the director of his own films and won an Academy Award Best Original Screenplay.
The story tells of a couple who decided to erase their memories of each other. The film has a non-linear narrative structure, and the viewer can observe the entire period of love between two people from its inception to the end.
Prestige (2006)
“Prestige” with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale in the lead roles did not become a cult in many respects due to the too confusing and complex storyline.
Based on the novel of the same name, The Prestige shows the rivalry between two 19th century magicians who set out to truly dazzle audiences with their illusions.
Interstellar (2014)
Interstellar is one of the outstanding creations of Christopher Nolan. Blockbuster is one of the greatest space-themed films to date. You can describe the film forever, starting with the visuals and ending with the gorgeous acting of the actors.
The plot takes place in a dark future where humanity is on the brink of extinction due to dust storms and hunger. Unable to find a solution, scientists decide to send a group of astronauts in search of another planet that could become a new home for humanity.
