Top applications and services for recognizing and determining the name of music

Earlier, when you heard a song you liked, you probably thought, “What if there was such a device that could identify music by sound.” Until recently, relative, one could only dream of such a thing. But in the modern world, anything is possible.

In fact, “relatively recently” is a slight understatement, as the music recognition function began to gain popularity back in 1999, really distant. The well-known Shazam can rightfully be considered the founder of this function, about which you should have heard quite a lot, unless you have been living without the Internet for the last 10-12 years.

In those days, the forgetful owner of a mobile phone could use a special service from Shazam, which, by the way, was far from free. How could you find a song from a passage at that time? There were no apps, smartphones, or utilities. It’s simple! The user sent a sample of the recorded music to their operator who was running the Shazam service.

After a while, sometimes quite a long time, the recognition result was sent to the user of the service. That’s all. But something we have already strongly deviated from the original topic – how to find music online.

Today, there are not a couple, not a trio, but several dozen services, the task of which is to search for music according to the sample being played. Everyone can use them and most of them are absolutely free. In fact, you will rarely find an online music recognition service that you have to pay for.

All the most popular services among users are free and they do their job perfectly. Actually, in this article we will analyze the most frequently used services. In total, we will consider three services: Shazam, AudioTag, SoundHound.

Let’s start parsing the services in the order in which they are given above, i.e. Let’s start with the tastiest one – Shazam. We will not delve fully into each of the services, since in this case you will be reading this article forever. Let’s just go over some of the features.

Shazam

Shazam is practically one of the founders of music recognition technology and has been helping its users identify music by sound for many years. In recent years, its popularity has only increased and, perhaps, not in vain.

Shazam has a pretty rich history that, as we mentioned, dates back to 1999. This service gained a more or less decent reputation three years later, in 2002, and in 2008 it became the first application that you could download to your iPhone from the AppStore. However, now is not about history.

Shazam is distributed in the form of a music recognition application on a huge number of platforms: Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows Phone, iOS, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Symbian OS, Android, Mac OS, Windows 10 Mobile. As you can see, the audience capture is quite wide. The only drawback is the lack of the ability to recognize music online on the Shazam website directly, i.e. you just need to download and install the application.

So how do you find a song by snippet using Shazam? It’s pretty simple: launch Shazam and click the corresponding button to start recognizing online music. Yes, of course you need a network connection. As with other services on this list.

AudioTag

The next service on our list is the opposite of Shazam – AudioTag. What is the difference? And the fact is that you can only identify music by sound on the service website, i.e. you don’t have to install any applications or utilities on different devices.

AudioTag has a pretty simple interface that anyone can understand. But here’s the negative – AudioTag does not dynamically process songs or audio cuts. You will need to upload the recorded audio file to the site, and then it will process it. Alternatively, you can provide a link to the audio file.

You will also have to get through the Captcha to get the recognition result. AudioTag is ideal if, for example, you have an unnamed audio track or you were able to record the sound of something on the recorder.

SoundHound

SoundHound is a program that also searches for music by an external sound source. We can safely say that SoundHound is on the same level with Shazam. The set of tools and they are quite similar and they are located on the same platforms: Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows Phone, iOS, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Android, Mac OS, Windows 10 Mobile.

SoundHound has one notable feature though. You can literally hum the song you want to the utility and it will try to find it for you. Like Shazam, SoundHound does not have a recognition function on its home site, everything is done exclusively through downloadable applications. Just like in any similar application, just press the special button and bring your device to the sound source.

There are many more services that can help you find your favorite song. But, in principle, they provide the same services, but only under different shells. We have provided little information on the use of the utilities, because even the person who took the smartphone in his hands for the first time will understand their interface: turn on the application, press the calling button and bring the device to the sound source.
