Windows 10 updates are perceived by many as a negative aspect of the operating system, as it can lead to PC reboots without the user’s desire, often breaks program compatibility, disables some functions or completely breaks some applications.

Regardless, updates are important as they fix known bugs, provide performance and stability improvements, introduce new features, and most importantly, fix software flaws. But given how large the user base of Microsoft products is, incompatibilities are inevitable. Low FPS in games after Windows 10 update is a fairly common problem, but it can be solved.

Solution 1: roll back the latest graphics card driver

Note that this solution may not apply to all devices, as it all depends on whether the GPU drivers were installed on the computer along with Windows updates. In this case, follow these steps:

1. Right-click on Start and select Device Manager.
2. Expand the Display Adapters section.
3. Right click on the installed graphics card and click Properties.
4. Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver (note: if this button is grayed out, it means that Windows cannot find the previous version of the driver).

Solution 2: update your graphics card drivers

If you were unable to roll back the driver or the previous step did not help fix the low FPS, you should make sure that your graphics drivers are up to date. Keep in mind that installing GPU drivers through Device Manager is far from optimal, so you should download the drivers for your specific video card model from the manufacturer’s website.

If you are not sure what drivers you need, you can, as in the previous option, go to the Device Manager and update the drivers.

Solution 3: disable the game bar

The game bar is initially useful, but sometimes it can crash. So try disabling it and see if that helps:

1. Right-click on Start and select Settings.
2. Go to the Games section.
3. Disable the option and check the FPS level in the problem game.

Solution 4: change your Windows notification settings

According to some users, disabling Windows Tips and Suggestions helped them fix the low FPS issue.

1. Right-click on Start and select Settings.
2. Go to the System section.
3. Click Notifications & Actions on the left.
4. Scroll down to the Notifications section and uncheck the box next to “Get tips, hints and tips when using Windows.”

Solution 5: remove the latest Windows update

If the FPS drop in Windows 10 started as a result of the latest update, you can consider removing it. Please note that this method only works up to 30 days after installing the update. Otherwise, you need to think about restoring Windows with the preservation of all files.

1. Right-click on the Start button, and go to the Control Panel.
2. Select the Programs and Features section.
3. On the left menu, go to View installed updates.
4. Sort the list by date so that the latest updates are at the top of the list.
5. Scroll down to the Microsoft Windows section.
6. Right-click the most recent update (there may be multiple entries) and select Uninstall.
7. Restart your computer and check if the FPS has increased.

In almost all known situations, the listed methods should help. If there is no expected result, the matter can be much more complicated, you will have to update, remove and roll back drivers one by one, and in exceptional cases – even roll back to the previous version of Windows.
