The error with the missing Edgegdi.dll file is related to application compatibility. The problem started showing up on Windows systems since 2004. Code execution cannot continue because when you try to open or run some programs, access to them becomes impossible, and the task manager, event viewer, and other functions by default cannot be reproduced.
The error is caused by third party applications such as antivirus software or system optimizers. In some cases, reinstalling will fix the problem. However, if it appears quite often, it is necessary to take action and eliminate the underlying causes. Unfortunately, there is no universal solution, so it is worth trying each of the methods below in sequence.
Solution 1. Reinstall the app
The most obvious variant of the appearance of the message about the missing file Edgegdi.dll, is the incorrect installation of the program. Therefore, you should remove it and install it again.
- Right click on the Windows icon and select Control Panel.
- Go to the Programs and Features section.
- Find the problematic application in the list of installed programs.
- Highlight it and click Remove.
- After completing the uninstallation process, try installing the program again.
Solution 2: Run the app in compatibility mode
How to do it:
- Right-click on the application shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab, and check the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode.
- Select the previous version of Windows from the drop-down menu.
- Then click Apply and Ok.
- Try each of the available versions until the application starts.
Solution 3: Search for malware in Safe Mode
Instruction:
- Right click on the Windows icon and select Run.
- Enter the msconfig command and click OK.
- In the System Configuration window, go to the Boot tab.
- Check the box next to Safe Mode, with the ability to connect to the network.
- Click Apply and Ok.
- After restarting your computer in safe mode, run a full system scan with your antivirus software.
Solution 4. Update your drivers
Guide to action:
- Right click on the Windows icon and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Display adapters section.
- Right click on the driver, and click Update Drivers.
- In the next window, select Search automatically for updated drivers.
- Wait for the process to complete.
- Do this for all drivers in the Video adapters section.
- Reboot your system.
You should also expand each of the sections, and see if there are drivers marked with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. Such software should also be updated.
Solution 5. Recover your system
The last and rather radical solution is to restore the system to a previous state when everything was working fine. It should be borne in mind that all programs and applications installed after the restore point will be removed, they will have to be reinstalled.
- Right click on the Windows icon and select Control Panel.
- Go to the Recovery section, and click Start System Restore.
- In the next window, click Next.
- Select the restore point to which you want to roll back the system.
- If there are few of them, you can check the Show other restore points item.
- Click next and follow the prompts of the system.
This process may take some time and then restart your computer. Therefore, it is recommended to first save open documents and work in running programs.
