Xbox One not seeing game disc: how to fix

Occasionally, there is an issue with Xbox One where the console will not respond at all when a disc is inserted. The player inserts a disc with any game, but it does not appear on the home screen, in the library, or anywhere else. By default, the installation of the game should start automatically, without additional actions from the user. We want to put everything in its place by talking about the reasons and how to fix the problem.

XBox console issues

Causes of malfunction

Possible causes:

  • The disc is too dirty or there are many small, deep scratches on the blade.
  • The laser inside the drive is defective. It breaks down after a certain time.
  • The drive has not been serviced in a long time.
  • Console configuration issue.

What can help?

We have developed and tested several working ways to solve the problem.

1. Changing the power consumption mode

If the system is set to automatically start the disk, then after installing it in the console, you should examine the power consumption settings and edit them as needed.

  1. Press the Xbox key to go to the console guide.
  2. Launch the “System” tab and go to the “Settings” section.
  3. Select the “Power on and start” item and open the “Power on and start mode” section.
  4. Switch to “Power on mode” and activate “Energy saving”.
  5. Restart the console completely by pressing and holding the Xbox key for about 10 seconds. As soon as the game console turns off, you must press the key again to turn on the console.
  6. Try to re-insert the disc into the drive and check if it is recognized. If the disk is working, then you can return to the instant opening mode right now.

2. Completely shutting down the Xbox

If you turn off the console completely, then it resets the basic startup settings to the standard ones. If there are occasional system crashes, this should help.

Step by step guide:

  1. Disable the console using the menu.
  2. Once the Xbox turns off, you should unplug the cable and leave it there for 10 minutes.
  3. Connect the power cable to the console and start it up.
  4. Wait for a couple of minutes after switching on.
  5. Insert disc. Make sure its content is being determined.

It is also possible to perform a hard reset by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. After a complete shutdown, it can be restarted.

3. Try to insert the disc differently

It is enough to use the guide:

  1. Place your finger in the hole inside the disc (right in the middle).
  2. Bring the disc to the connector and slightly nudge it, the console itself should pick up and place the disc.
  3. Check if the disc starts on Xbox.

Another fun way is to set the console at a different angle. This method helps eliminate the risk of the Xbox grabbing and seating the disc correctly.

Insert disc

What should be done:

  1. Tilt the Xbox approximately 50-70 °, and the disc area will tilt along with the console.
  2. Insert the disc into the drive and wait for 5 seconds.
  3. Place the attachment on a flat surface.

Most likely the problem with the disk is no longer relevant, otherwise the last chance is to contact Xbox support… They may recommend additional ways to start the disk after all, or advise you to contact a service center.
