During a successful marketing campaign, the temptation is inevitable to buy a computer with 32 GB of RAM and a clock speed of 3600 MHz. Why not, because the numbers are really colossal?
The problem is that the increase in numbers is disproportionate to the increase in FPS in games. If before there was 8 GB of 2400 MHz, you might think that 4 times more memory and a third higher frequency will increase FPS 5 times. This is not the case, the improvement will turn out to be quite insignificant – 5-15%. Thus, money is spent with low efficiency.

Do not buy video cards with the “Gaming OC” prefix
At first glance, this is completely illogical. Gamers always want the best. You wouldn’t buy a simple RTX 2080 graphics card, would you? After all, you can buy a real beast – the RTX 2080 Gaming OC eXtreme Edition.
Adding gaming, overclock (OC) and the like to the name of the video card is just a marketing gimmick. The usual way to get gamers to pay even more, for almost the same, already expensive component. This is not to say that this applies to all equipment. For example, gaming mice are really worth the money.
During the release of the next new video card, it is in the interests of the manufacturer to squeeze the maximum out of it. They push productivity to the upper, safe operating limit. It would be silly for the RTX 2080 benchmark results to show 10,000 points, and the game version scored 12,500. That would mean that the developers deliberately lowered performance, leaving 25% unused.
Gaming video cards are slightly overclocked, but the same video adapters. In some cases, they are distinguished by the presence of a better cooling system. There is no more difference. With the same success, we can buy a regular version of a video card and overclock it. At the output, this will give no more than 5% increase in FPS.
Despite the subtle increase in performance, the price of equipment with a Gaming console is much more expensive. Typically, the price is 30% higher for only 5% performance gain. This is clearly not the best buy. It’s easier to overclock a regular video card.

RAM clock speed doesn’t matter in games
This is not to say that frequency does not matter at all. However, twice the frequency will not give a 2-fold increase in performance, you should not expect even a 50% improvement. If you replace the old RAM from 1333 MHz with a new 2666 MHz bar, the increase in FPS will be only 10%. And this is at best, usually even less.
How significant the gain will be depends on the type of game coding. In most games, however, there is no significant improvement. The reason is simple – during the processing of frames from the game, a video card is used, everything happens inside it. Quite rarely, you have to receive data from RAM, here the frequency will affect the speed of work.
But the frequency of RAM gives significant advantages in a number of other areas. Among them: creating photos, rendering videos, compiling code, etc. It’s just not significant for games. It is enough to choose the RAM of a worthy brand, and it is not necessary to focus on the frequency. If there is a choice between a cheaper RAM with a lower frequency and an expensive one with a higher speed, it is better to take the former. It is wiser to invest the remaining funds in a video card, on which a lot really depends.
As with gaming graphics cards, don’t be fooled by the RAM looking cool or the developer talking about good optimization. Most likely, you simply do not need the best RAM frequency.
Don’t judge a processor by generation and number of cores
There is a staggering difference in performance between Intel 1st and 2nd generation CPUs. However, after switching from the second to the third generation, it will not be possible to notice a strong difference in power. At times, with the new generation, there is little performance improvement. Changes may relate to the integrated video card, the company adds functions and reduces energy costs.
For a gamer, the optimization of the graphics core is of little importance, a discrete graphics card is still used. In terms of performance gains, the difference may be minimal. It all depends on the specific generation and direction of the engineers.
As a general rule of thumb, don’t overpay 50% to improve performance by 10%.
With kernels, everything is also ambiguous. In the same game, a 12-core CPU can only hit 60 fps, while another 4-core CPU can hit 80 fps. During game processing, performance, core bandwidth is much more important than their number. It’s all due to real-time rendering.
The processor must have time to process the required data stream after the user clicks and transfer it to the video card. The faster it does this, the higher the frame rate. However, the number of cores will not help him with this. However, a pair of cores often improves performance simply because a game requires multiple processes to process in parallel. For example, it is useful in a game against dozens of opponents with complex AI.
When choosing a processor, you should rely on single-threaded performance. It is she who reflects how quickly the CPU can process data. The faster the processor reacts to the user’s action, the sooner the video card will receive the necessary instructions.
If in doubt and cannot make a choice, use the benchmarks that are abundant on the network. It is enough to hammer the processor model and the word “benchmark” into Google. For example, let’s compare the i7-7700K and the Ryzen 7 1800X. The first 4.2 GHz processor has a clock speed of 4 cores, and the score is 12036. The competitor has a frequency of 3.6 GHz, the number of cores is 8, and the performance indicator is 15406. At first glance, Ryzen 7 will give out more FPS, but this is not so. Due to the higher frequency of one core, the i7 will show better results. And the number of AMD processor cores will not help it.
