If you own a 4K TV and PS4 Pro console, but still want to play in 1080p, then this guide is for you. As we all know, 4K is a fairly high resolution and in some games, when working in this mode, there are strong drops in frame rates.
PS4 Pro-enabled games will automatically tune to the most appropriate mode, be it 4K or 1080p, depending on your monitor. However, most players would like to be able to choose for themselves.
Unfortunately, each game is quite different. Some games do provide the player with the ability to choose between 4K and 1080p modes through the in-game menu. Others, however, simply do not give such a choice, and in them you have to play in the resolution in which the monitor or TV works for you.
However, there is one tricky way to get the game to work at the resolution you want and more. Let’s look at an example of changing the resolution on The Last Guardian. As some of you may know, in The Last Guardian you cannot change the resolution, but it can be tricked a little:
- First, you will need to go to Settings – Sound & Screen – Video Output Settings. Change the video output resolution to 1080p.
- Then go to The Last Guardian.
- After entering the game, go back to the Video Output settings and re-set the previous 4K resolution.
This way, you can switch the game to 1080p, which will be upscaled to 4K using the console itself, but the smoothness of 1080p will be preserved. A similar method can be applied not only to The Last Guardian, but also to other projects that do not have a resolution setting.
