If the child is outside the house, then the animal will sit in the bedroom until it returns. Of course, you can’t take him into battle.

Lonely Miko

Before the expansion Hearthfire animal could not be taken home. The players were indignant, because the tragic story of the dog will not leave anyone indifferent. Now it remains to wait for the child to ask Dovahkiin leave the dog at home, and give Miko’s story a happy sequel.

In battle, the dog is peculiar sacrifice oneself: rushes first at the enemy or rushes in front of the owner, neutralizing traps, and maybe inadvertently to bite friendly character.
