DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED is an error that occurs when launching or running games / programs that use graphics card resources. Users note that this error can also appear at random times when the computer is running.

In some cases, a rather lengthy message is attached to the DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error, which states that the video driver has been updated or the video card has been disconnected from the system.

  • The video driver did not start working correctly.
  • Not the most successful overclocking of a video card.
  • The video card was not properly connected to the motherboard.
  • The video card is out of power.
  • Third-party software interferes with the normal operation of the video driver.

Solution # 1 DirectX update

The first thing you should do is update DirectX. This API is mentioned in the error message: your system may be missing some DirectX libraries that are required for the game / program to run properly. Go to this linkto download the DirectX web installer from Microsoft. Run dxwebsetup.exe and follow the instructions on the screen. Once DirectX is updated, restart your PC and check for the DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error.

Solution # 2 Disable ShadowPlay

Owners of Nvidia graphics cards claim that disabling ShadowPlay helped them fight the bug. The latter could begin to conflict with the video game being launched. You can deactivate gameplay recording through the GeForce Experience graphics card control panel. For added reliability, you can also disable services such as NVIDIA Display Driver Service, NVIDIA GeForce Experience Service, NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D Driver Service, and NVIDIA Streamer Service.

Solution # 3 Increase the paging file

There have also been reports on the Internet that this problem can be fixed by increasing the paging file. This solution doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s worth a try. You can increase the paging file as follows (on Windows 10):

  • press Win + S;
  • write the query “System” and select the found result;
  • click on the line “Additional system parameters”;
  • in the new window go to the “Advanced” tab;
  • click on “Options …” in the performance section;
  • again go to the “Advanced” tab, but only in a new window;
  • in the virtual memory section, click on “Change …”;
  • uncheck the option “Automatically select paging file size”;
  • set the initial and maximum size (depends on the amount of RAM and your tasks!), then click “Set”;
  • close all windows and restart your computer.

Run the toy you want and see if the DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error shows up this time.

Solution # 4 Reinstalling the video driver

Reinstalling the video driver is a reliable solution for many problems that arise when launching resource-intensive applications. The process of uninstalling the driver includes the following:

  1. removal of the video driver via DDU;
  2. loading a new version of the driver;
  3. driver installation.

It’s really that simple. But what is DDU? Display Driver Uninstaller (or DDU) is a special utility that will instantly remove the problematic video driver from your PC. After that, it remains only to go to the site of the GP manufacturer (Nvidia, AMD or Intel), download the new driver and install it.

You can download DDU by this link on the official website of the developers. Double-click DDU v18.0.2.2.exe and follow the instructions on the screen to install the DDU. After installation, boot into Windows in Safe Mode (important!) And run Display Driver Uninstaller. The following window will appear in front of you:

Select your GPU manufacturer and click “Uninstall and Restart (Highly Recommended.” Wait until the computer is cleaned, and then install the new version of the video driver. Restart your PC again and check for DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED).

Solution # 5 Removing recently installed software

Before the error appeared, did you install new programs? It was they who could become the catalyst for the emergence of the problem. Get rid of this software and test the game / application you want. Also, do not forget that some third-party services may conflict with the driver for the video card.

To check this, you need to perform a Secure Boot.

  • Press Win + R;
  • write msconfig and press Enter;
  • go to the “Services” tab;
  • check the box next to “Don’t show Microsoft services”;
  • click on “Disable all”;
  • now go to the “Startup” tab and click “Open Task Manager”;
  • disable all software in the list and restart your PC.

Check for DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED upon login. If the error disappeared, then one of the disabled services was undoubtedly causing it. Then you need to turn on the services one by one to find the “culprit.”

Solution # 6 Adjust power supply parameters

You can also try to get rid of this problem by changing some of the power settings. There is nothing dangerous in these actions – do not worry!

  • Press Win + S;
  • write “Control Panel” and select the found result;
  • select large icons in view mode;
  • open the section “Power supply”;
  • select the scheme “High performance” and click next to it on “Configure power scheme”;
  • click on the line “Change advanced power settings”;
  • expand “PCI Express” → “Link State Power Management”;
  • in the value line, set “Off.” and click “Apply”;
  • restart your PC.

Solution # 7 Checking the video card and its connection

Did the DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error appear immediately after installing the video card? You need to check a few things: whether the video card is in the correct PCI-E, whether additional power is connected to it (if any), whether everything is fine with the video card itself, for example, whether its contacts are oxidized, and so on. If everything is fine, then try reconnecting the video card.

Solution # 8 Changing the graphics settings in the game

Have you tried lowering the graphics settings in the game? Some users claim that they managed to get rid of the DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error by lowering the graphics quality. Anti-aliasing, quality of shadows, lighting and textures, drawing range of details and more – try lowering the quality of the most resource-intensive settings and see if the situation changes.
